Tamil Nadu – the Land of the Tamils – is the true heartland of South India. Dominating the southern tip of the country, this diverse state is often referred to as the cradle of the Dravidian civilization, an ancient culture distinguished by unique customs.
The cultural icons are everywhere – colossal temples with their towering, riotously rainbow-coloured gopurams (gateway towers), intricate rock carvings, evocative music and complex classical dance. Pilgrims and travelers pour into the ancient sites of Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, Tiruchirapalli, Tanjore, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Rameswaram. This is a place where you will often feel swept away by the religious and cultural fervour – joining worshippers for puja (offerings or prayers) in ancient temples or drawn into the colour, noise and chaos of one of the many temple festivals. But for those who can quickly get ‘templed-out’, there are wonderful distractions. There are small former colonial enclaves along the Coromandel Coast like Pondicherry and Tranquebar, where time stands still. Close to Madurai, discover the grand kitschy mansions and lip-smacking food of the Chettiars. In the west under the shadow of the Southern Ghats, a tropical forest laden range of mountains lie the Kongu Nadu. This is a region of fertile monsoon-fed farmland that is fringed by deciduous forest and its wildlife reserves, towering mountains covered in tea, coffee, and colonial history, and a unique Tamil culture and cuisine, all waiting to be discovered. |
